About Greater Vision Wood Carving

Greater Visions Wood Carving

Eagle carving in progress

Greater Visions is built on a strong foundation of carving and construction experience. Mick began carving in 1978, showing his work at conventions throughout his early career. Mick accumulated his own stock of specialty woods and tools in his home shop and opened Greater Visions in 2015. Greater Visions is dedicated to producing products and providing education in the wood carving industry.

How Greater Visions Came to Be

Wood working and carving has always been a large part of Mick’s Life. For 50 years, he worked in construction. Then in March 2015, Mick slipped off a metal roof, cracking his skull. He lost his sight when internal bleeding damaged his optic nerve. Mick could no longer work construction, but he wasn’t about to give up.

With the help of the Oregon Commission for the Blind, Mick began to reeducate himself. He learned how to safely use woodworking equipment while visually impaired. He rediscovered his passion for carving. Most importantly, he discovered his vision: to bring art and nature to both the visually able and the visually impaired.

Mick’s Vision

Mick knows that his carvings are a gift from God. By losing his eyesight, he was able to see why he was given this gift.

Mick shows his work them to people who have no sight—some of them have never had any visual sight. With their hands, they can “see” the arch of a cougar’s back or the swoosh of a fish’s fins.

With his wood carving, Mick brings spirituality and nature to both the visually able, and the visually impaired.
